What the study found
Coupon receipt and use were common among U.S. adults who use cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco. Many participants received coupons for more than one tobacco product and used them.
Why the authors say this matters
The authors conclude that the pattern of receiving and using coupons across multiple products illustrates how tobacco companies cross-market products. The findings suggest tobacco companies' efforts to reach customers and keep them engaged through discount offers are largely successful.
What the researchers tested
The researchers used data from the National Panel of Tobacco Consumer Studies, a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults who use cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco. In 2020, 1,989 of 3,922 invited panel members completed a survey, and the team estimated weighted prevalence and used logistic regression models.
What worked and what didn't
An estimated 41.7% of surveyed adults who use tobacco received a tobacco product coupon in the past 12 months, and 78.7% of those recipients redeemed one. Receipt was most common for cigarette coupons (34.3%), followed by smokeless tobacco (8.8%), e-cigarette (6.1%), and cigar (4.4%) coupons. Coupon use was reported for cigarettes (76.8%), smokeless tobacco (63.9%), cigars (60.3%), and e-cigarettes (37.1%). Providing contact information to sign up for coupons was the strongest predictor of both coupon receipt (OR = 5.45) and coupon use (OR = 1.94).
What to keep in mind
The abstract does not describe detailed study limitations. The findings are based on a survey of U.S. adults who use tobacco and should be read within that scope.
